Digital Smile Design
See and feel your new smile before you decide.
What Is Digital Smile Design (DSD)?
Digital Smile Design (DSD) is an approach to planning and designing your smile using digital technology, clinical expertise and your input. We use details digital scans, photographs and videos of your teeth and face to understand your individual features and help plan a smile that suits you. As part of the process, you can preview a proposed version of your smile and, where appropriate, experience a physical mock-up over your existing teeth. This allows you to see and feel the proposed changes before deciding whether to proceed with treatment.

Our Smile Design Dental Clinic
At Mona Vale Dental, as a certified DSD clinic, we use Digital Smile Design technology and a considered approach to smile planning to help patients understand and explore what's possible for their smile.
How Does DSD Work?
We capture photographs and videos and digital scans to understand the relationship between your facial features, teeth, gums and lips. Your proposed smile is then digitally designed around your individual features and goals you’ve discussed with your dentist.
You can be involved in the design process, discuss the proposed changes and provide feedback. We then develop a treatment plan based on the agreed approach and your individual dental needs.
Test Drive Your Smile Makeover
Our Smile Test Drive gives you the opportunity to experience a proposed version of your smile before deciding whether to proceed with treatment.
If you choose to explore the process further, we can use Digital Smile Design to create a physical mock-up of the proposed smile using 3D-printing technology. The mock-up can sit over your existing teeth, allowing you to see and feel the proposed changes.
You can then discuss what you see, provide feedback and consider whether you’d like to proceed with treatment.
What Can DSD Do for You?
Digital Smile Design provides you the opportunity to visualise and experience a proposed version of your smile before treatment. It also allows you to be involved iin the design process, providing feedback as you explore the proposed changes.
What Treatments Are Performed Using DSD?
Digital Smile Design can be incorporated into the planning of a range of cosmetic and restorative dental treatments, depending on your individual needs. These may include veneers, crowns, Invisalign, dental implants, and tooth whitening.
Natural Restorations
Plan a smile that considers the relationship between your teeth, gums, lips, and facial features, with an aim of creating a balanced and natural-looking result.
Digital Smile Design can form part of the implant planning, helping us consider the appearance and position of replacement teeth as part of your overall smile.
Digital planning can help guide the design of crowns as part of restoring damaged or worn teeth, while considering the overall appearance of your smile.
Digital Smile Design can be used alongside orthodontic planning to consider how changes to tooth position may contribute to your overall smile.
Tooth whitening may form part of a broader smile improvement plan where appropriate, including consideration of the overall colour and appearance of your smile.
Veneers can be designed using Digital Smile Design to consider your individual facial features, tooth proportions and smile goals.
