What are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by filling the gap with a natural-looking replacement tooth. The bridge is supported by the teeth next to the gap, which helps keep it securely in place. A bridge is fixed in place, unlike a removable denture, so you don’t need to take it out. It can restore your ability to eat and speak comfortably, improve the appearance of your smile and help prevent the remaining teeth from shifting into the space. There are different types of dental bridges, and the right option for you will depend on where the tooth is missing, the condition of the surrounding teeth and your overall oral health. We’ll assess your teeth and explain the options with you, so you understand what’s involved before deciding whether a bridge is right for you.
What materials are used for bridges?
Dental bridges can be made from different materials, including porcelain, zirconia and metal alloys. At Mona Vale Dental, we most commonly use multilayer translucent zirconia because it is strong, durable and designed to look natural.
The material used for your bridge will depend on factors such as the positioning of the missing tooth, your bite and the amount of strength required. We'll discuss the most suitable material with you as part of your treatment planning.
In some cases, a temporary bridge may be placed first. This may be recommended when a tooth has recently been removed and the area needs time to heal, or when we are working through a more complex treatment plan. Temporary bridges are typically made from acrylic.
How Does Getting a Dental Bridge Work?
In some cases, a dental bridge can be designed and made at our Mona Vale practice using our in-house CEREC technology. We digitally scan your teeth, design the bridge on-screen and mill it from porcelain or zirconia on-site.
Once the bridge has been made, we check the fit and your bite carefully before bonding it into place. This can allow the entire process to be completed in a single visit, depending on your individual circumstances and the number and position of the missing teeth.
A same-day bridge can be a convenient option if you’re suitable for this type of treatment and would prefer to avoid multiple appointments.
For some patients, a lab-made bridge may be the more appropriate option. Your teeth are prepared and digitally scanned, and the design is sent to the laboratory where your bridge is cutom-made.
While your permanent bridge is being made, you may need a temporary restoration to protect the prepared teeth. You’ll then return to the practice for your permanent bridge to be fitted, your bite checked and any final adjustments made.
