Ariel’s role at Mona Vale Dental
At Mona Vale Dental, Ariel plays an important role in helping patients maintain healthy gums and supporting the dentists in providing long-term dental care.
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Ariel helps monitor and manage gum health so that patients can maintain their teeth and, when needed, be ready for further dental treatment such as crowns, veneers, or dental implants.
Education is a key part of her role. Ariel helps patients understand what is happening in their mouth and how small changes to daily habits can help protect their teeth and gums over time.
Who does Ariel often help?
Ariel sees a wide range of patients, including:
- Patients wanting to maintain healthy gums and teeth
- Patients who stain easily from coffee, tea, or wine
- Patients who feel nervous about having their teeth cleaned
- Patients with braces or Invisalign who need help cleaning around appliances
- Patients maintaining dental work such as veneers or implants
- Patients preparing for whitening treatment
- Children becoming familiar with the dental environment
She particularly enjoys helping anxious patients feel comfortable and helping children build confidence with dental visits.
What happens during an oral health visit
During your visit, Ariel will usually:
- Review your oral health history and concerns
- Assess your gum health
- Gently remove plaque and staining
- Talk through ways to care for your teeth and gums at home
- Help you understand any changes in your oral health
For adult patients, one of the dentists will also come in during the appointment to complete the dental examination.

Gentle cleaning with AIRFLOW®
Straightening teeth can improve both the appearance of a smile and the way teeth work together.
Dr Gatland has a particular interest in orthodontic treatment and enjoys helping patients improve both the position of their teeth and the appearance of their smile.
He completed postgraduate orthodontic training through the Orthodontic Long Course at the University of Sydney, which focuses on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning.
Treatment options may include:
- Invisalign
- Clear aligners
- Braces
Teeth straightening can help improve the look of the smile, make teeth easier to clean, and support a healthier bite.
Dr Gatland treats both teenagers and adults who want to straighten their teeth or improve how their teeth fit together.
Some patients had braces years ago, but notice their teeth have shifted over time. In these situations, treatment can help guide the teeth back into a better position.
For patients thinking about cosmetic dentistry, straightening the teeth first can sometimes create a better starting point before other treatments, such as bonding or veneers, are considered.
Helping nervous patients feel comfortable
Ariel understands that some patients feel anxious about having their teeth cleaned.
Before starting treatment, she takes time to talk through any concerns and explain what will happen during the visit. She checks in regularly, explains each step clearly, and offers breaks whenever needed.
Patients are also welcome to listen to music or podcasts during their appointment if they wish.
Comfort touches during your visit
Ariel aims to make appointments as comfortable as possible.
During visits, she offers:
- Step-by-step explanations
- Breaks whenever needed
- Stress balls if patients want something to hold
- The option to listen to music or podcasts
- Soft, fluffy blankets for comfort if needed
For longer visits, she also offers warm towels at the end of the appointment so patients can leave feeling refreshed.
Training and education
Ariel completed her Bachelor of Oral Health at the University of Otago.
Alongside caring for patients, she also supervises Bachelor of Oral Health students from the University of Sydney in clinical training, supporting the next generation of oral health professionals.
Outside the practice
Outside of work, Ariel enjoys Pilates, pickleball, running, board games with friends, reading and experimenting with different matcha recipes and cooking.
