<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
If you’re deciding between Invisalign and braces, this guide explains the key differences, including cost, comfort, treatment time, and which option best suits your situation. If you’re ready to explore treatment, you can also learn more about Invisalign in Mona Vale or book a consultation with our team.

Back in the day (before 1998), there was only one way to correct misalignment: dental braces.

However, Invisalign has now joined the ranks as a viable treatment to straighten teeth.

There are many factors to consider when choosing between braces and Invisalign.

Do I need orthodontic treatment in the first place?

Orthodontic treatment corrects the alignment of a patient’s teeth and jaw. It’s suitable for adults and children, but early intervention often works best to stop the problem from worsening over time.

Misalignment problems include:

Crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth

Impacted teeth

Overbite

Underbite

Crossbite

Wide spaces between teeth

Some of the complications that occur when misalignment problems aren’t addressed:

Lack of confidence in smiling

Pain or tooth loss due to impaction

Higher susceptibility to tooth decay and gum disease (as it’s harder to clean teeth properly)

Braces and Invisalign are two similar treatment options…

Dr. Chase Gatland recommends braces treatment for:

People with mild to complex orthodontic issues

People who are not confident that they will reliably wear aligners (in particular, children or teenagers)

Dr. Chase Gatland recommends Invisalign treatment for:

People with mild to moderate orthodontic problems

People who prefer a discreet option that’s difficult for others to see

People who play contact sports, as the aligners can be removed

What are braces, and who is this treatment suitable for?

Dental braces are metal or ceramic-based appliances that orthodontists or dentists fix to the teeth. Constant pressure is applied by the system of brackets and wires to gradually move the teeth into their set position.

This is a suitable option for patients with complex orthodontic issues, such as deep overbites. For patients with large overbites, braces can usually achieve alignment of the teeth faster than Invisalign.

What is Invisalign, and who is this treatment suitable for?

Removable clear aligners move teeth into place by applying constant pressure. Every two weeks, the patient replaces their set of BPA-free plastic trays with a tighter version that shifts their teeth even more.

Invisalign is suitable for mild or moderate orthodontic problems. For example, crooked teeth, rotated teeth, gaps in teeth, or overcrowding.

How long does each treatment take?

Average treatment time for braces: Braces are worn for around 12 months to 24 months (depending on how complicated the condition is). They’re worn 24/7 and cannot be removed during the treatment period.

Average treatment time for Invisalign: Most people need to wear their invisible aligners for 6 to 12 months. Aligners must be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day (they can be removed for eating).

The cost of orthodontics: how much are braces vs Invisalign?

Cost of braces:

In Australia, braces generally cost between $5,000 and $8,500, depending on the type you get.

Traditional metal braces usually fall on the lower end of the scale, whereas ceramic braces can be more expensive as they’re less conspicuous (the patient can choose clear or tooth-coloured brackets that don’t stand out).

Cost of Invisalign:

You can expect to pay between $5,500 and $8,500 for Invisalign, which is usually a little pricier than ceramic or metal braces.

Factors that influence the cost of orthodontics

Payment plans:

Payment plans are often used to spread out the overall cost of the treatment.

Insurance:

Please note that orthodontic treatment isn’t covered by Medicare, however some of the cost may be covered under extras if you have private health insurance (depending on your policy). Ask your dentist or orthodontist for the health insurance item number, so you can check with your provider.

Which is more discreet, Invisalign or dental braces?

Invisalign, without a doubt!

This is the main advantage over traditional braces, which are definitely more visible.

On the other hand, many patients with braces like to add a splash of colour to their brackets via their choice of elastics, which can be changed at each appointment to make a fashion statement. Children and teenagers particularly enjoy this!

What is easier to manage on a day-to-day basis (Invisalign vs braces)?

It depends on your lifestyle and preferences.

Many people find braces are easier to manage because they don’t need to be removed when eating or drinking. This is a better option for patients who are less inclined to stick to the routine of removing and reinstalling the Invisalign aligners after each meal.

If you know that you won’t commit to this process, then it’s best to choose braces.

Daily maintenance of braces vs Invisalign aligners

Braces:

Brush brackets thoroughly while cleaning your teeth at least twice daily. Floss around the wires daily. You may require a special interdental brush to get into the spaces that are difficult to reach due to the wires.

Invisalign:

Rinse the aligners with lukewarm water every time you remove them from your mouth to prevent the build-up of bacteria.

Twice a day (morning and night), gently brush the trays with a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste, before rinsing with lukewarm water.

Do not put hot water on your aligners, as this could damage the plastic trays.

Clean your own teeth after every meal, to avoid staining or trapped particles (make sure the aligners aren’t in your mouth when cleaning your own teeth).

What is more comfortable to wear, Invisalign or braces?

Invisalign is probably more comfortable because the plastic trays don’t contain metal.

Some patients with braces may experience discomfort during the first week, as a result of the brackets rubbing against their cheeks. However, this can be managed by covering the brackets with dental wax.

It’s also common for braces wearers to experience a small amount of tenderness after getting their braces adjusted (tightened) at follow-up appointments. We recommend eating soft foods during this time.

How often do I need to have follow-up appointments?

Braces: Follow-up appointments are generally every four to eight weeks, however there’s no strict rule for this (it depends on the individual case). The orthodontist or dentist checks how the patient is progressing, tightens the braces, and replaces the wires if necessary.

Invisalign: Follow-up appointments occur every four to eight weeks. The orthodontist or dentist monitors progress and gives the patient a series of aligners that will last until their next appointment (note: the patient changes their aligners to a tighter version every one to two weeks, depending on the instructions they’ve been given).

Is there anything that I can’t consume with Invisalign vs braces?

Braces: Avoid brittle, chewy, or sticky foods that might damage your braces (everything else is fine).

Invisalign: Avoid food while the plastic trays are in your mouth. Aligners should be removed when eating or drinking anything other than water.

What option is best for you? Book a complimentary consultation…

We can discuss the best option for you during a complimentary consultation – contact us on (02) 9997 1100 to book an appointment.

If you’d like to read more information about orthodontic treatment, please refer to this FAQ on Invisalign and braces.

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
At Mona Vale Dental, giving back is part of our mission each year. In 2025, our team was proud to participate in the ADA Dental Health Foundation’s Dental Rescue Day®. It was a meaningful opportunity to support women in our local community who needed urgent dental care but faced barriers to accessing it.

Across the day, our team provided $14,373 in free dental care for women referred through trusted local support services. Each appointment focused on relieving pain, improving oral health, and restoring comfort in a calm, respectful setting.

What Is a Dental Rescue Day?

Dental Rescue Days® (DRD) are organised through the ADA Dental Health Foundation. Participating dental practices commit a half- or full-day to providing pro bono care to eligible patients referred through approved community organisations.

These days allow dental teams to deliver care using the same clinical standards applied to every patient. Treatment is provided with dignity, privacy, and compassion, helping to remove immediate barriers to comfort and well-being.

Who the Day Supported

This Rescue Day supported women connected with two Northern Beaches organisations that provide community services:

Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter: A community-based organisation supporting women experiencing homelessness. Their work focuses on safety, stability, and helping women rebuild their lives.

Their programs prioritise safety, recovery, and long-term wellbeing.

Both organisations play a vital role in supporting vulnerable members of the Northern Beaches community, and we were honoured to be involved.

Why We Take Part

Dental pain and oral health concerns can escalate quickly, especially during periods of stress or major life changes. Pain, infection, or damaged teeth can affect sleep, nutrition, confidence, and overall health.

A Dental Rescue Day® allows our team at Mona Vale Dental to use their clinical skills to ease discomfort and remove one more challenge from someone’s day-to-day life. It is a privilege, and a reminder of the impact accessible care can have on wellbeing and dignity.

A Team Effort Behind the Day

A Dental Rescue Day® is only possible with the commitment of the entire practice. A huge thank you to our dentists, hygienists, and support team who volunteered their time to ensure each appointment ran smoothly and respectfully.

We also thank the ADA Dental Health Foundation for coordinating the program and connecting dental practices with organisations doing essential work in the community.

Learn More (And How to Help)

If you would like to learn more about the program or support the organisations involved, you can visit:

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
Ice cream, cold water, winter air; if these make you wince, you may have teeth sensitive to cold. That zing sensation could indicate multiple circumstances. With the right, expert-led dental support, you can find a solution. Let’s go through common causes and how dentists assess this type of dental sensitivity.

Why Teeth Become Sensitive to Cold

To understand why cold sensations can cause pain, it’s useful to look at how each tooth is built. Your teeth have layers: The outside is hard enamel, and beneath is dentine. This layer has thousands of tiny tube-like structures running through it, which connect to your nerves.

When enamel wears away or gums pull back, dentine gets exposed. Cold hits those tubes, fluid moves inside them, and your nerves trigger your pain signals.

Dentist Tests We Use

Dental practitioners run through a few specific tests to help pinpoint the cause of tooth sensitivity. These typically take 5 minutes and can detect surface wear, a crack, or nerve trouble, acting as a preliminary assessment before more in-depth testing.

Cold Test: Ice or refrigerant spray applied to your tooth. Your reaction shows whether the nerve is healthy, inflamed, or damaged.

Air Test: A stream of air directed at your tooth. Exposed dentine will cause you to feel sharp sensitivity.

Bite Test: Bite down on a small instrument. Pain when biting or releasing indicates a possible crack or fracture.

Dye: A special dye seeps into cracks. Under magnification, these fissures appear clearly.

Percussion: Tapping your tooth gently. If it hurts, there’s likely inflammation or infection in the tissue around the roots.

Common Findings

Test results often reveal one or more of the following diagnoses:

Acid Wear: Shiny and smooth enamel instead of textured

Receded Gums: Root surfaces are lacking enamel, causing cold sensitivity

Failing Fillings: Old fillings can shrink or pull away from the tooth over time

Recent Dental Work: Persistent sensitivity for a few weeks after a filling or crown

Hairline Cracks: Even cracks you can’t see without magnification cause sharp pain

Grinding: Teeth grinding and jaw clenching wear enamel, leading to flat edges and chipped corners.

When to See a Dentist Urgently

Many cases of cold sensitivity aren’t an emergency. However, if you experience the following, it’s recommended to schedule an appointment:

Feeling pain when you bite

Worsening pain by the day

Throbbing that affects sleep

Swelling or a lump near the tooth

Pain lingering after the cold’s gone

Reacting to hot temperatures as well

Next Steps If Cold Triggers Pain

If cold drinks make you wince, it’s advisable to get it checked. At Mona Vale Dental, you’ll receive expert-led testing and treatment solutions. Our team ensures your comfort and will explain everything each step of the way. Whether you need bonding to repair worn edges or something more extensive, our dental solutions have got you covered.

Still experiencing sensitive teeth? Book a tooth wear assessment and find relief through our care-focused, innovative approaches.

FAQs

Can tooth sensitivity go away on its own?

In some cases, yes, such as if the sensation is mild and you use sensitive toothpaste. However, it could indicate other dental concerns, so it’s best to schedule an appointment.

How long do cold sensitivity tests take?

A first appointment can range between 15 and 30 minutes. Each test takes a few seconds.

Will the dentist tests hurt?

Tests for sensitive teeth might be uncomfortable for a moment, but nothing painful. Your comfort is a top priority, so we can take a break if needed.

What if only one tooth is sensitive to cold?

Usually, this means that the tooth has a crack, cavity, or worn patch. It’s easier to fix than multiple sensitive teeth.

Can whitening cause cold sensitivity?

Yes, whitening can make teeth sensitive temporarily. If you’ve already got a tooth sensitive to cold, tell your dentist before whitening.

Is sensitivity worse in winter?

Cold air can set off sensitive teeth more when it’s freezing out. If you notice it’s seasonal, that’s a sign to confirm with your dentist before it worsens.

Sensitive teeth shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your morning coffee or a cold drink on a hot Sydney day. If you’re in Mona Vale or the Northern Beaches and experiencing tooth sensitivity, there are immediate and permanent treatment options backed by expertise and technology.

Same-Day Relief Options

For urgent solutions, these dental approaches can make a difference in a single appointment, with improvement within days.

Desensitising Treatments: Special gels or varnishes are applied directly to sensitive spots. They block the tiny tubes in your teeth that send pain signals. Cost: $80–$150 per session.

Fluoride Applications: Professional-grade fluoride strengthens weakened enamel and reduces sensitivity. This is stronger than over-the-counter products. Cost: $80–$150.

Sealants: We can close exposed root surfaces or worn spots with a protective coating. It creates a barrier between your tooth and what’s triggering the pain. Cost: $150–$300 per tooth.

Options like these work well for mild to moderate sensitivity. For lasting results, you might need something more substantial.

Repairing Damaged or Worn Teeth

If your sensitivity comes from structural damage or significant wear, these treatments address the root cause and offer lasting relief.

Composite Bonding: Builds up worn edges, covers exposed roots, and seals off sensitive spots. It’s usually done in one visit and matches your natural tooth colour. Cost: $300–$600 per tooth.

Porcelain Veneers: Cover the front surface of your tooth completely. They’re ideal if you have multiple worn or sensitive teeth and want to improve the appearance of your smile. Cost: $1,500–$2,500 per tooth.

Dental Crowns: Cap badly worn or cracked teeth. They protect from further damage and eliminate sensitivity. Same-day crowns are often available for instant help. Cost: $1,800–$2,500 per tooth.

Bite Protection for Grinding

One of the common causes of sensitivity is grinding your teeth at night. It can damage enamel quickly, requiring recurrent solutions like night guards. This is the most important step, because without it, any other treatment is a temporary patch.

A custom night guard isn’t flimsy like chemist-bought, general ones. When getting fitted, the dentist takes digital scans of your teeth and creates a tailor-made guard. You wear it while you sleep, and it absorbs the grinding force so your teeth don’t.

Price Ranges and Finance

Here’s an estimated overview of costs related to teeth sensitivity treatments:

Quick-Relief Options: $80–$300 per visit

Composite Bonding: $300–$600 per tooth

Porcelain Veneers: $1,500–$2,500 per tooth

Crowns: $1,800–$2,500 per tooth

Night Guards: $600–$950

Exact pricing depends on how many teeth need work, the type of smile rehabilitation, and which treatments you choose. At Mona Vale Dental in Sydney, we’ll provide a detailed quote after your assessment and discuss payment options.

FAQs

Will my health fund cover any of this?

Many funds cover a portion of preventive treatments like fluoride and night guards. Bonding, veneers, and crowns have varying levels of coverage, depending on your policy. We can check your benefits and discuss payment plans with you.

What if I have a tooth sensitive to cold?

When you have a tooth sensitive to cold, it typically indicates you have exposed dentine or a crack. Book an assessment so we can test the tooth and work out the right course of treatment.

Is the treatment painful?

Most treatments are painless. For things like bonding or crowns, we use a local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable. You might have minor sensitivity for a day or two afterwards.

Can sensitivity come back after treatment?

If we mend the cause by sealing a crack or stopping grinding, sensitivity shouldn’t return. If you keep grinding your teeth without a guard or drink a lot of acidic drinks, new wear can develop over time.

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
Many might think dentistry starts when you walk into the clinic. But it begins with practices at home to help keep your kid’s teeth and gums healthy.

Every day, choices can affect your child’s smile: what toothbrush you buy, how long they brush, and even whether you rinse afterwards. These small decisions add up to big differences in oral health.

Taking simple yet effective steps for optimal oral hygiene works when parents, children, and dental professionals all collaborate. The goal isn’t just avoiding cavities; it’s building lifelong habits that protect your child’s teeth and confidence.

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry involves healthy oral care steps and exercises that help you avoid or minimise tooth troubles. Dentists and oral health therapists can give you useful, tailored tips to use at home that support any professional dental care done at a practice.

At check-ups for kids, dentists and oral hygienists:

Do gentle checks and cleanings

Show you and your kid how to brush and floss

Give advice that fits your child’s unique needs

Make dental visits feel less intimidating

Creating a secure, comfortable environment at the dentist helps encourage kids to stick to their oral care routine.

Why Brushing Baby Teeth Matters

While baby teeth fall out, taking care of and preserving them is still important. Milk teeth help your child talk properly and chew food. They also hold space so adult teeth can grow straight. When baby teeth rot or tooth decay begins, it can be painful. Sometimes, kids need fillings and teeth pulled out.

Starting brushing habits early sets your child up for success. Early, proper oral care helps avoid common dental issues like rotting and decay, as well as larger problems later in life.

Brushing Milestones by Age: A Parent-Friendly Guide

Birth to First Tooth: Use a clean, wet cloth to wipe baby’s gums after feeds.

First Tooth to Age 2: Time for a proper toothbrush! Use a soft-bristled infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.

Ages 2 to 3: When teeth start touching, introduce floss. Your dentist can show you and your child the easiest way to do this.

Ages 4 to 6: Slowly let your kids brush their teeth on their own, but be there to guide and correct if they don’t quite have the hang of it.

Ages 7 to 8: Most children can handle brushing alone at this stage, but it’s still worth checking their technique now and then.

Tips for Cleaning Milk Teeth Effectively

While the way you brush is important, having the right tools and tips goes a long way in building your kid’s oral care habits. Make sure your child:

Has a Proper Toothbrush: Since the teeth and mouth are smaller, your child should use size-appropriate brushes that have soft bristles.

Uses the Right Amount of Toothpaste: More isn’t better. A rice-sized bit until age 3, then a pea-sized amount from 3 to 6 years old.

Doesn’t Rinse After Brushing: It’s best not to gargle water after brushing. This leaves protective fluoride on the teeth.

Brushes for the Correct Duration: Put on their favourite song or a short video for two minutes. This can make teeth brushing time more fun for your child.

Keeps the Whole Mouth Clean: The back teeth and tongue need cleaning too. Help them properly clean these areas to avoid a buildup of germs.

Choosing Suitable Dental Products

Bristle Types: Small heads with soft bristles prevent harming your kid’s tender gums while still keeping them clean

Kind of Toothbrush: Manual brushes are suitable for children under 3 while they are learning. Electric ones can be great for older kids, who often find them more exciting, and can be more effective at cleaning.

Toothpaste: Use toothpaste with 1000ppm fluoride for children under 3, and 1350 to 1500ppm for ages 3 to 6. Check the tube to determine fluoride content.

Dental Floss and Picks: Picks are ideal for beginners before progressing to floss. It’s recommended you try different types to see what clicks for your child.

Tip: Try to get a new toothbrush every 3 months.

Common Dental Mistakes and What to Do Instead

It’s natural to have a few poor techniques or misconceptions around teeth cleaning, especially for kids. Here are a few mistakes and how you can correct them:

Mistakes

Fixes

Rinsing straight after brushing

Encouraging kids to spit the foam out

Using adult toothbrushes with hard bristles

Using child-sized soft brushes

Brushing in 30 seconds

Watching until they habitually stick to 2 minutes

Thinking 4-year-olds can brush without supervision

Guiding your kid until they’re at least 7 or 8 years old

Ignoring floss once teeth start touching

Starting early, even if it’s awkward, so your kid can learn

Support Children’s Smiles With the Right Dentist

A child’s first dental visit should happen by age 1, or when that first tooth grows. Early visits help kids get used to the whole experience.

Here’s what to expect at kids’ dentist appointments:

Quick look around to check everything’s developing well

Gentle clean if needed

Chat about what you’re doing at home

Going twice a year means catching small problems before they become big, expensive ones. Children’s dentistry at leading practices offers practical advice and gentle support to help each kid in the early years of their dental care journey.

Handling Dental Anxiety in Kids

Many children worry about dental visits. Understandably, they can be nervous patients, since the sounds and procedures might bring slight discomfort or fear.

Dentists and parents are aware of these nerves and help ease them by:

Don’t use ‘brave’ when discussing dental visits, or tell them they have been ‘brave’ afterwards. This reinforces the idea that dental visits are normally scary.

Explaining what happens in simple terms beforehand

Using cheerful words when talking about dentists

Finding books or videos about dental visits

Praising them afterwards to reassure them

How to Make Good Dental Habits Stick

Building good tooth care habits takes time. As you guide your child through the years, focus on the basics: proper brushing for their age, right tools, helping when needed, starting flossing early, and regular dentist visits.

Keeping dental hygiene and dentist visits a positive experience through compassion and patience provides a steady foundation for lasting habits. With the right approach, you can help encourage preventive practices to keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Contact our leading experts in children’s dentistry by calling Mona Vale Dental at (02) 9997 1100 or filling in our online booking form; let’s start the journey to proper oral health.

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
There are signs that your bite might be working against you. Whether it’s waking up with a jaw ache and sensitive teeth, finding the root cause is vital. Modern technology like MODJAW® helps dentists understand how the jaw and mouth move together. This lets them design treatments that last longer for maximum comfort.

If you’re considering a smile makeover, mending any functionality issues, or a deeper understanding of your dental options, MODJAW® might be the fit for you.

What Affects Jaw Pain and Sensitivity?

Bite problems don’t happen overnight. Several factors can throw jaw alignment off track:

Grinding or clenching: It often occurs during sleep without you knowing

Missing teeth: Forces remaining teeth to work harder

Old dental work: Crowns or fillings that don’t fit properly anymore

Stress: Causes muscle tension that affects jaw position

Natural tooth wear: Years of chewing gradually change how teeth meet

When your bite is uneven, some teeth take on more pressure than others. This leads to sensitivity, chips, and discomfort.

What Is MODJAW® in Dentistry?

MODJAW® is a simple and painless scan that provides 4D visualisations of how your jaw moves in real time. It helps us see how your teeth come together when you chew, talk, or smile.

The technology shows us:

Real-time jaw movement – how your jaw tracks when you open and close

Bite pressure patterns – where you’re putting too much force

Chewing cycle analysis – whether both sides of your jaw work evenly

Early warning signs – problems we can catch before they cause pain

This gives dentists valuable information about:

Whether you’re clenching or grinding (even if you don’t realise it)

Where pressure is building up and causing damage

Why dental work may not have lasted in the past

During the scan, which takes a few minutes, you’ll wear a small sensor while moving your jaw naturally. This captures dynamic interactions between the teeth and jaw joints. There are no needles or invasive measures, just precise data about your bite.

Who Is This For?

You might benefit from a MODJAW® scan if you have:

Worn or chipped teeth

Jaw tension or grinding

Dental work that keeps breaking, like veneers

Have had crowns or fillings that didn’t last

Feel your bite is “off”

Clicking, popping, or pain when you chew

Plans for major dental work

Why Digital Dentistry Like MODJAW® Matters

Many people might seek support if they have chipped teeth, jaw tightness, or ineffective dental work. Often, the issue is how the teeth and jaw function together. This advanced technology:

Identifies patterns before any major restorative dentistry and smile rehabilitation

Makes it easier to fix the underlying cause first than to keep replacing dental work that fails

Helps catch early signs and prevent bigger issues later

Can MODJAW® Help With TMJ Disorders?

MODJAW® is particularly useful for TMJ issues because it shows us exactly how your jaw moves during normal function.

It’s used to diagnose and treat this disorder by analysing mandibular kinematics in functional movements. This means noticing patterns that might not show up in traditional examinations.

If you’re experiencing jaw clicking, locking, or persistent pain, TMJ disorder treatment can be combined with MODJAW® analysis for targeted relief.

Tooth Wear and Pain Relief: The MODJAW® Way

With the extra digitally informed information, dentists can:

Design dental work that fits your unique jaw movement

Make your treatment more comfortable and precise

Reduce the risk of future damage or breakage

Create results that feel natural and last longer

Your jaw moves in a unique pattern. Cookie-cutter solutions rarely work long-term because they don’t account for these individual differences. Concrete data means fewer adjustments, better comfort, and dental work that actually holds up over time.

Combining MODJAW® and Smile Design

At Mona Vale Dental, we use Digital Smile Design (DSD) to help plan how your new smile will look. Together, MODJAW® and DSD allow our principal dental surgeon, Dr Graham, to plan your treatment from both a functional and aesthetic point of view.

This combination is particularly powerful for complex cases. We can show you how your new smile will look and function before we begin treatment.

Get Trusted Care With Mona Vale Dental

Living with jaw pain or watching your teeth wear down isn’t something you should accept as normal. Dr Alistair Graham at our practice has helped hundreds of patients solve bite problems.

What makes our approach different:

We investigate the real cause, not just treat symptoms

Advanced technology gives us answers instead of guesswork

Every treatment plan is built around your specific jaw movement

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
A dental crown is a common recommendation, but many aren’t sure what it involves or why it’s necessary. Thanks to advances in digital dentistry, some crowns can now be made and placed in just one visit.

This guide explains what crowns are and when you might need one. We’ll also cover what you can expect during treatment, the types available, the costs in Australia, and how to care for your crown once it’s in place.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped restoration placed over a weakened or damaged tooth. It strengthens the tooth, restores normal function, and improves appearance while providing long-term protection.

You might also hear them called tooth crowns or dental caps: different names for the same treatment that covers and protects the entire visible part of the tooth.

What Happens If You Don’t Get a Crown When You Need One?

Waiting too long can increase the chance of further damage. A weakened tooth can crack, become more sensitive, or deteriorate over time. In many cases, avoiding a crown may lead to more complex procedures later on, such as an extraction or dental implant.

When Do You Actually Need a Tooth Crown?

A crown is often recommended when a tooth is too weak or damaged to function properly on its own. You may need a crown if:

You’ve had a root canal, which leaves the tooth brittle and prone to fractures

A large filling is failing or no longer providing enough support

Your tooth is cracked, chipped, or broken, even if it doesn’t hurt yet

You have worn-down teeth from grinding, erosion, or long-term wear

You’d like to correct the appearance of a misshapen or badly discoloured tooth

In these cases, a crown restores stability, protects what’s left of the natural tooth, and often improves function and appearance at the same time.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials. Each type offers different advantages depending on your needs.

Porcelain (ceramic): Natural-looking; used for most teeth

Zirconia: A highly durable option that’s ideal for molars

Metal (e.g. gold or alloy): Long-lasting, though less discreet

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): A blend of strength and appearance

Resin or stainless steel: Used for temporary crowns or in paediatric care

Same-day crowns are typically made from ceramic or zirconia and crafted on-site using digital scanning and milling tools.

Dental Crown vs. Veneer vs. Filling

Crowns are often confused with dental veneers or tooth fillings, but each of these treatments serves a very different purpose.

Treatment

Best For

Coverage

Durability

Appearance

Crown

Structural damage, post-root canal

Full tooth

Very strong

Excellent

Veneer

Cosmetic improvements

Front surface

Moderate

Excellent

Filling

Small cavities

Part of tooth

Limited

Good

How Much Does a Dental Cap Cost in Australia?

The cost of a dental crown can vary based on the material used, how many teeth are being treated, and whether it’s a same-day or multi-visit procedure. At Mona Vale Dental, a single ceramic crown typically costs between $1,900 and $2,100. This includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, and the crown itself.

Many private health funds offer partial rebates for dental crowns, depending on your level of extras cover and annual limits. It’s worth contacting your provider in advance to confirm these details. Flexible, interest-free payment plans are also available for patients who prefer to spread the cost over time.

Are Dental Crowns Worth It?

Tooth crowns offer a number of benefits. They can:

Restore your biting and chewing strength

Protect weak or impaired teeth from further damage

Improve the look of a tooth with discolouration or structural flaws

Last 10–15 years on average with proper care

There are some considerations, too. Crowns require enamel removal and are non-reversible. Cost can also be a factor. In rare cases, people may experience short-term sensitivity or need future adjustments. However, for many patients, crowns are a long-term solution that stops them needing more extensive work later on.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The traditional crown procedure usually takes place over two separate appointments:

First visit: The tooth is prepared to make space for the crown. A digital scan or physical impression is taken, and you might get a temporary crown to protect the tooth.

Second visit: The permanent crown is checked for fit, colour, and bite alignment before being securely bonded in place.

Some dental practices now offer same-day crowns using advanced technology like CEREC. This process uses digital scanning and 3D imaging to create a more precise, natural-looking crown on-site. The crown can be designed, milled, and placed during a single appointment, saving you time and removing the need for a temporary crown or follow-up visit. Same-day crowns also tend to offer a better fit and a more lifelike appearance.

How Long Do Tooth Crowns Last?

With good care, a crown can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or more. Brushing twice daily, flossing, and attending regular dental check-ups can help your crown last as long as possible. Avoiding habits like grinding, nail-biting, or chewing ice is also important.

Can I Eat Normally With a Dental Crown?

Yes, once the crown is properly bonded and the anaesthetic has worn off, you can resume your normal eating habits. In the first 24 hours, it’s best to avoid very hard, sticky, or crunchy foods to allow the bonding material to stabilise. After that, your crown should function just like a natural tooth.

Still Not Sure if You Need One? Let’s Talk

Not every damaged or worn tooth requires a crown. If there are alternative options, your dentist will guide you through them. At Mona Vale Dental, we take the time to assess your needs and recommend the most appropriate treatment, whether that’s a crown or a more conservative option.

<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
Wisdom tooth pain often shows up during your late teens or early twenties. Some lucky individuals aren’t too affected by this, just experiencing a little tenderness. But for others, it can be incredibly sore and uncomfortable. Any pain that lingers or gets worse over time could be pointing to a deeper issue.

In this guide, we take a look at some of the common causes of wisdom tooth pain. We’ll cover what’s considered “normal,” when professional care like removal might be needed, and what you can do at home to find relief.

What Causes Wisdom Tooth Pain?

Sometime between the ages of 17 and 25, your wisdom teeth begin to erupt. If there’s limited space, they can press against other teeth and irritate the gums. It’s similar to teething in infants, and equally as uncomfortable. In some cases, a tooth only partially breaks through or stays trapped under the gum, which can lead to swelling, infection, or ongoing pain.

When a wisdom tooth grows at an angle or presses into the one beside it, this is called impaction. It can build pressure in the jaw or gum, which is often painful. Even when an eruption seems to be fairly normal, it’s not unusual to feel a dull ache. Pain that sticks around or suddenly gets worse usually means you might have other dental problems, though.

If you’re feeling extreme or lasting pain, it could be one of these issues:

Swollen or inflamed gums (pericoronitis)

Nearby teeth getting crowded or pushed

A tooth that’s only partly erupted or impacted

Tooth decay in hard-to-clean wisdom teeth

Infection in the surrounding gums or jaw

What Wisdom Tooth Pain Feels Like

Most people just want to know if what they’re feeling is normal, but wisdom tooth pain shows up in different ways. It’s not always easy to tell when something’s wrong. Some “red flag” symptoms to look out for include:

A steady ache in the back of your mouth or jaw

Red, swollen, or tender gums near the tooth

Pain that radiates to your ear, neck, or side of the face

Discomfort while chewing, speaking, or opening your mouth

Bad breath or a lingering unpleasant taste

How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Pain Last?

Mild pain might settle down within a few days. If it stays for more than a week (or keeps coming back), take that as a sign that something more is going on.

Can Wisdom Tooth Pain Go Away on Its Own?

In some (lucky) cases, you might find that your wisdom tooth stops being a problem on its own. If the tooth is erupting cleanly and there’s space, you might just feel some “teething” pains and then nothing once it’s all done. But if not, the pain could point to issues like:

Impaction: When the new tooth is stuck below the gum or pressing against other teeth

Pericoronitis: Swelling or infection in the gum tissue over a partially erupted tooth

Decay: Wisdom teeth can be hard to reach and clean, and are prone to cavities and gum issues

How to Relieve Wisdom Tooth Pain at Home

If you’re waiting for a dental appointment and need short-term relief, try:

Rinsing with warm salty water

Using a cold compress outside your cheek

Taking Panadol or ibuprofen

Numbing the gum with a gel that contains benzocaine

Sleeping with your head slightly raised

These can take the edge off, but if there’s an underlying issue, it won’t fix the cause.

Can Panadol Help With Wisdom Tooth Pain?

Panadol (or paracetamol) can help bring down pain and discomfort. It’s often effective on its own or when taken with ibuprofen. Always follow the dosage directions, and speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns or medical conditions.

When to See Your Dentist

Unsure whether your wisdom tooth pain needs attention or not? If you’ve been nodding along unhappily to the lists of symptoms, or it’s been affecting your day-to-day, this is worth getting checked. Book a visit if you notice:

Pain lasts more than a few days

There’s swelling in your face or gums

You can’t open your mouth properly

You notice signs of infection, like pus or fever

It’s hard to sleep, eat, or focus

The pain keeps coming and going

Even if this is your first dental visit, your dentist can take X-rays to see how your wisdom teeth are developing and suggest the next steps.

Wisdom Tooth Pain Treatment Options

The right treatment depends on what’s causing the issue. After a proper check-up, your dentist might recommend:

Monitoring: If the teeth are erupting without pain or complications

Deep cleaning or antibiotics: For infections like pericoronitis

Minor gum surgery: To remove tissue that’s blocking the tooth

Extraction: If the tooth is impacted, decayed, or causing crowding

Still in Pain? Book a Consultation

Wisdom tooth pain doesn’t have to disrupt your day. If it’s making it hard to eat, sleep, or focus, let us help. Mona Vale Dental offers personalised care in a calming setting.
<?xml encoding="UTF-8">
Yes, it can.

There’s a strong connection between menopause and oral health complications, due to natural hormonal changes that occur when a woman approaches the end of her reproductive years. You probably associate this transition with hot flashes and muscle aches.

There’s far less awareness about menopause-related oral health problems, even though these are widespread. A UK study shows that up to half of all menopausal women present with symptoms in their oral cavity (we can assume a similar pattern in Australia).

Concerningly, if left untreated, these symptoms can lead to permanent tooth loss and bone degradation. I’ve treated many patients who take good care of their oral health, but still develop tooth pain, bleeding gums, and other symptoms when their estrogen levels drop. Dentists like myself are often the first to notice the tell-tale signs of menopause during examinations.

Most patients are surprised when I explain their teeth and gums are particularly vulnerable to hormonal changes during menopause and just before it begins. They don’t usually hear this information from pregnancy-related health professionals, who are generally unaware of the link between menopause and oral health complications.

There needs to be more awareness on all levels, so women know to take extra steps to protect their teeth and gums during menopause. Keep reading to find out about common problems like bleeding gums during menopause. We also explain how to look after your oral health during this natural transition in your life.

Different Stages of Menopause That Could Impact Oral Health

Menopause is a natural process that occurs when a woman’s body prepares to stop producing eggs. Most women experience this transition between the ages of 45 and 55, for a period of seven to 14 years.

The mouth contains many cells that rely on estrogen to function optimally and produce saliva. As estrogen levels drop during perimenopause and menopause, it becomes harder for the oral cavity to maintain a healthy balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria. Bad bacteria is more likely to accumulate, without adequate levels of saliva to wash it away. Lower levels of estrogen can also restrict blood flow to the gums and cause problems with bone density.

There are three stages:

Perimenopause usually begins when the ovaries slowly produce less estrogen during a woman’s forties. There’s an accelerated drop in estrogen in the year or two before menopause, which often causes noticeable symptoms.

Menopause is characterised by a cessation of menstrual periods (diagnosed over 12 consecutive months). The ovaries have stopped releasing eggs, and estrogen levels are far lower now.

Postmenopause occurs after you haven’t had your period for 12 consecutive months and lasts for the rest of your life. Ovary estrogen production is at the lowest level. Your body now finds different ways to produce estrogen, like via fat tissue.

How Does Menopause Affect Teeth and Gums? (Symptoms)

“My gums were inflamed and there were signs they were starting to recede. I also noticed my mouth became unbearably dry. I was waking up several times in the night gasping for a drink, which left me exhausted. When I drank a bit too much coffee, I’d get this strange metallic, bitter flavour.” Eileen Adamson quoted in the Daily Mail.

Examples of oral health symptoms that can be related to menopause:

Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks

Sore, inflamed, or bleeding gums (menopausal gingivostomatitis)

Food tastes different (bitter, metallic, or too salty, peppery or sour)

Dry mouth

Burning mouth

Mouth ulcers

Cavities

Loose teeth

Bad breath

Chewing is painful

Biting challenges

Receding gums

White patches on the tongue or cheeks (oral thrush)

Burning throat

Problems swallowing

Most Common Menopause-Related Oral Health Conditions

Dry Mouth:

This common symptom occurs in 45% of healthy menopausal women, according to a study of 154 people. There’s a higher risk of cavities and periodontal disease developing, as a result of lower moisture levels in the mouth. A dry mouth can also cause some challenges with chewing, swallowing, and even speaking. Drinking more water, limiting caffeine, and chewing sugar-free gum are a few home remedies that can help stimulate the production of saliva.

Tooth Sensitivity:

Do you wince when you consume something hot or cold? Tooth sensitivity occurs when the inner layer of your tooth loses its protective enamel, leaving the internal nerves vulnerable to pain. When estrogen levels drop, the lining of the mouth may also thin and bones in the oral cavity can become more sensitive. This increases the risk of injury.

Gum Inflammation:

If your gums are red, shiny, sore, or bleed when brushing, you may have menopausal gingivostomatitis or gingivitis. This is easy for dentists to treat if caught early but can progress to severe gum infection (periodontitis) and tooth loss if you do nothing about it.

Taste Bud Changes:

It’s possible the foods you used to enjoy may taste metallic, salty, or bitter for a while. This happens when the oral tissue becomes drier due to low saliva levels. Some people find that using plastic, bamboo, glass, or ceramic utensils and cookware rectifies this.

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS):

This uncomfortable condition affects the oral mucosa, causing a burning or tingling sensation in the mouth. It can also create tenderness, numbness, or pain. Symptoms may develop gradually or rapidly, affecting multiple parts of the mouth (but mainly the tip of the tongue). Treatment depends on what the underlying cause is. There are several medications available, so it’s essential to see your doctor or dentist as soon as possible.

Oral Thrush:

Fluctuating hormone levels can lead to an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans, which creates unpleasant symptoms, such as:

White raised patches inside the oral cavity

Sore throat

Difficulty swallowing

Redness in and around the mouth

Loss of taste

Symptoms may be alleviated by rinsing with warm salt water and brushing and flossing twice daily, but it’s important to consult with your dentist in case you need anti-fungal medication, too.

Book Now

Treatment and Preventative Care

If you notice any changes in your mouth, please book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Early dental intervention can reverse or manage many of the symptoms before they become more difficult (and expensive) to treat.

Dental treatment depends on the specific condition. Many menopause-related oral symptoms can be treated with a deep cleaning treatment and prescribed medication before the situation worsens. In serious cases, surgery may be required to treat the repercussions of widespread oral infection.

In Terms of Prevention:

It’s important to visit your dentist at least once a year to undergo an examination that picks up early warning signs. Your dentist will also deep clean any hard-to-reach places. Please also continue taking measures to look after your oral hygiene:

Clean teeth and gums every morning and night

Floss once a day

Stay on top of your water intake

Chew sugar-free gum to stop your mouth from getting dry

Alcohol in moderation (or none at all)

Don’t take recreational drugs

Hormone Therapy:

It’s worth noting that hormone therapy has been shown to ease menopausal symptoms. One 2017 study found that women receiving hormone therapy (containing estrogen) were 44% less likely to experience severe gum disease (periodontitis) than women in the non-treatment group.

However, in some cases, HRT has been associated with serious side effects, so it’s crucial to discuss this with your doctor. There’s also some controversy around how effective hormone therapy is for alleviating oral health symptoms. At any rate, more research is needed, as there have been limited studies into the impact of menopause on oral health.

Mona Vale Dental Offers Care for Teeth & Gums in Menopause

We show you how to adapt your daily routine to protect your oral health during this transition in your life.
